Welcome to Adulthood

April Fools’! Nope, it’s no joke – It is my SITS Day!

(Can’t view Welcome to Adulthood in all its glory? Nope, it isn’t a April Fools’ prank. We are best viewed on more current versions of IE, Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc. Or try clicking here.)

When I received an email about my SITS day, I was at work. Suddenly, my voice rang out over the silent sea of cubicles, “APRIL 1 is my SITS DAY! YIP-YIPPEE!!” And then I danced and twirled and jumped for joy.

My cube mate swiveled around quickly in her chair to face me. Bewildered but amused she asked, “Your SITS Day? You need a whole day to SIT? Wait, I don’t get it. Why are you jumping up and down right now in the middle of the office?”

I explained to her (as well as to the handful of other heads who had bobbed above the cubicle walls to witness my excitement) just how special of a day this was for me.

I told them about how I joined this great community of about 8,000 sassy ladies (and some men) bloggers who had the right idea: support each other. That means by reading other blogs, by engaging, by commenting, by writing, by networking.

“And it is called SIT??” my colleague asked again.

“No, SITS. The Secret Is in The Sauce. But, it’s what the name really represents that counts.”

I told them how I went to Bloggy Boot Camp last year with my bff Nicole (of The Fickle Nickle), and how excited we were to meet so many awesome, intelligent, motivated bloggers from around the country. To be chosen as Featured Blogger on this April Fools’ Day is unbelievable. (I did think it was a joke at first!) Are you all really here??  This is the luckiest April Fools’ Day to date!

One of my favorite things about being an adult are the moments that are so special that you know you will remember them forever. The moments that feel so good that you want to prance, spin, sing, laugh, leap, hug, and YIP-YIPPEE with your hands in the air! This, my friends, is one of those moments for me. What have been those kinds of joyous adulthood moments for YOU? Share in the comments!

I am happy to meet all of you!  To hear your stories! To read your blogs! To celebrate and commiserate all things wonderful or challenging about adulthood together in this neat little community! If you want to stay involved with everything happening on Welcome to Adulthood, please feel free to subscribe, explore, bookmark, or better yet, submit!

I’m inspired by all of you. And here, among the many meditations on adulthood, I hope that you find something that inspires you too!

  6. Lindsay says:

Congrats on your feature day! I feel like I have been kind of stumbling around adulthood these days. I am 25, living in a foreign country with my Danish bf, not making money, and quickly going into debt. I am often confused about what I should be doing. Something incredible and taking a once in a lifetime opportunity, or going home to make money and start paying off my debt. What is right, what would make me the happiest, and what would be the adult thing to do? I hope to find some inspiration on your site!

  7. Amy says:

Happy SITS day. I have two nearly-21 year old daughters who would enjoy learning along with you.

  8. Happy SITS Day! Your question made me think… okay, so technically I was already thinking… about how I’m going on a Girl’s Weekend away this weekend to a place I haven’t been since college Spring Break 10…ahem 15 years ago. It was the only time in my life I ever through my hands up in the air and danced for joy… on the bar…not sure that’s quite what you meant, but it’s what came to mind… and I’m pretty sure I won’t get on the bar this weekend, but it’s a fun memory because it was so out of character for me!

  9. Happy SITS Day!! I hope you enjoy every minute!

  10. Happy April 1st and hope you have the most amazing SITS day – enjoy 🙂

  17. Happy SITS day! At 47 I’m still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up.

  18. What a wonderful blog idea. I wish I had had a road map for adulthood. Seems like we expect everyone to just jump in with no direction. I love what you’re doing. I realized I was an adult waaaay late. My husband had our daughter on his shoulders, I had a baby strapped to my belly, and we were walking down the sidewalk to the circus. That’s when it hit me, “This is what adults do.” I’m a slow learner 🙂

  19. Marie Cole says:

Love your blog title, I am sooo looking forward to reading more and HAPPY SITS DAY! 🙂

  20. Suzanne says:

Congratulations on your SITS day Mara! From reading some of your posts, I’d say you’ve handled adulthood quite well! Looking forward to reading more… 🙂

  23. Katrina says:

HAPPY SITS DAY! What a wonderful thing you have done for those of us out there who just have to have a common voice to know what we are going through.

You know I remember my mother telling me several times as a child when I would say “I can’t wait to grow up.” If only I had listened when she would tell me “slow down, you have the rest of your life for that.”

Adulthood is definitely something to be survived, whatever your plight in life. Thanks for this community!

  24. Yup, we’re here!
    Congrats!!
    – agata.

  25. Shell says:

  26. I ALWAYS love reading your blog! Every post is a real treat, and it lets us ‘adults’ know that we can walk together through this journey. Thanks for building this community!! xo

  27. LBDDiaries says:

Happy happy SITS day! One of my most joyous adulthood moments was my wedding to Alpha Hubby. He and my son had their own ceremony, “do you take this boy to be your son” and “do you take this man to be your father” – very powerful and joyous moment for me, and a boy who’d been believing for a dad. I really like your blog – can’t wait to dig into your posts!

  28. Holyoke Home says:

Oh honey. I TOTALLY could have used this blog from 1996-2004! So glad you’re here now! I thought I was supposed to get it all, have it all, know it all magically – as an adult. Instead? It’s a daily adventure! Glad to know you’re along on the ride!

  29. Tiffany says:

Happy SITS Day to you and Happy April Fool’s! Great blog title for today. You have a wonderful blog. I love the whole concept of it!

  32. Semper Wifey says:

    Congratulations on your feature!!!

  33. This is a great blog. Adulthood is filled with ups and downs. Stuff happens you can’t ever imagine, yet somehow we get through it. We’re trying to sell our house and it’s a terrible time. I had a fight with a good friend recently and not sure if we’ll speak again. Welcome to being an adult!!!

  34. Chelsea says:

Happy SITS day! What a great blog. I remember finding out I was pregnant with my first child. I’d say that’s been the biggest adulthood moment for me so far.

  35. PatriciaD says:

Congrats on YOUR day!! I bet you were so excited…I’d do the happy dance, too!!

Enjoy your day and have fun reading everyone’s 000000000000000000000000000001 oops my puppy decided she needed to comment about growing up, too. She’s a little 3 lb Chihuahua who just turned 1 year old and thinks she’s all grown up…hehehe

  36. Happy SITS day! I don’t talk about blogging with co-workers. I’ve found they just don’t “get it.”

  37. Christine says:

I feel like an adult when…

-I keep the house tidy ‘just because’ and not because I have people coming over.

-I actually call and make a dentist appointment before the receptionist calls to tell me I’m 2 years overdue for a check up.

-I think about eating chocolate cake for breakfast, but instead eat something sensible.

Honestly, I usually feel like I’m about 12 years old. Too old to be considered a child, too young to be considered an adult, and old enough to feel awkward most of the time about it all 🙂

    Enjoy the blog love.

  38. Grace says:

Happy April Fools Day and SITS day from someone who’s been an adult prolly twice as long as you have!

  39. bookjunkie says:

Love the premise of your blog…..and congrats on your SITS Day 🙂

I’m 40 but I still don’t feel like an adult….I’d much rather continue to be child-like and look at the world with wonder 🙂

  40. Grace says:

Wait a minute. That’s not right. I mean from someone who’s prolly twice your age!

  41. Kelly says:

    Happy SITS Day!

I have always said that I didn’t sign up for this whole “responsible adult thing” haha

  42. FANTASTIC blogging, I love it! Adulthood is funny.. I’ve just been flying by the seat of my pants the past few years – now I’m 27, and I’m like “WTH happened?”?

  50. Katie Gates says:

Hi Mara, Congrats on your SITS day! I love the idea of this blog. My favorite part of adulthood is simply being in it. I went through the motions as a child (and I wasn’t unpleasant), but I think I was born for the years of being free and answering to no one. Now, I’m off to read more of your posts…

  51. Congratulations on your SITS day! I LOVE your blog! Everything about it is so unique and inspiring. I feel at home here! 🙂 Keep shining!

Yay for you! Happy SITS day! Love your blog and glad you can help me transition to adulthood since I’ve been kicking and screaming about growing up!!

  59. Gina says:

This is such an awesomely positive idea for a blog! So many blogs are about “indulging the inner child” or “reluctantly entering my thirties” and it is refreshing to see somebody so openly and happily embracing adulthood!

  60. Trish says:

Such a great idea for a blog! Happy SITS Day!

  61. Deidre says:

    Happy SITS day.

    Ahh big adulthood moments.

One of mine was realising that if though i love my parents and fully understand their wishes, I knew I had to do what’s best for me. It’s why i am still in Australia.

  62. You are da bomb, girl! Your blog is so very relatable to me as a 26 year old who left grad school less than 2 years ago, attempting to embrace this thing “adulthood” thing. I have a true appreciation for you & your blog!

    Enjoy all the LOOOVEEE today!!
    -Jess

  63. Luke says:

  65. Amanda says:

Happy SITS day! Love your blog premise.

  66. Madison says:

    Congrats on your SITS day!

I always intended to reach adulthood but I think it may be too late for me. Some things you can put off until they’re irrelevant. 😉

  67. CK says:

I love that story at the beginning. Yes. We sit all day 😉

  68. Happy SITS Day! I love your blog concept! Very unique!

  71. c.c. says:

    howdy! happy sitsday!

so the moments that i’ve liked best … the week i spent in london (god, i LOVE that place), the first and last time i got those little shivery thingies you get with a guy (with the same guy … and it ended up a bust, and i’ve not experienced them with anybody else, unfortunately, but god i LOVED those, too … and i’d always thought they were bogus before i’d met him, aimless drives on country roads at sunset and pretty much any time spent with my niece and nephew.

    • c.c. says:

ugh. i forgot … there’s supposed to be a closing parenthetical mark between “before i’d met him” and the following comma. just in case you were curious. :]

  72. carla says:
